Short Story Shakeout (track)
> > Most recent update: 5/8/05

[   MAIN   ] [   STAFF   ] [   SCHEDULE   ] [   REGISTRATION   ]

Track instructor: C.J. (Jerry) Hannah
This track has been dropped from the schedule.

he Short Story Shakeout: From Concept To Climax is an intense, 3-day write, read and critique track that focuses on using the basic techniques of fiction, including characterization, point of view (voice), and plotting, and applies them step by step to the story idea, working through to the climax. Clearly, most writers have individual strengths and weaknesses, and by focusing on each of the techniques separately and then putting them together in a story, we can gain an insight into what our individual strengths and weaknesses are, thus gaining more control over our writing.

All good writing depends upon knowledge of techniques and how to apply them. The more you know, the more you're in control. The idea is to come to the workshop with a basic story idea in the form of a 250-word proposal and, through critiquing and discussing each other’s work as we progress through the various techniques, produce a publishable short story. In addition to short story execution, everything addressed in this course it fundamentally rooted in and applicable to the most effective, successful novel and creative nonfiction writing.

Writers registering for this track will begin work on Friday aftenoon and complete their story (hopefully) by 11 p.m. on Sunday. Enrollment is limited and attendance at all sessions is required.

Please note that this track requires a minimum number of participants and will be removed from the schedule if not met.
